Gathering Embers is a three-part programme, inspired by the ‘The Schools Collection’, engaging young people in the collection of their local folklore and traditional lifeways from community elders, run by Wild Awake and Pobal Eascarrach.
These workshops engage young people directly with these practices, through creative skills, such as wild food foraging, fire-making, storytelling and traditional crafts. We aim to cultivate relationship with and inspire a passion to learn from community members, who still have access to this traditional knowledge. This project promotes the relevance and necessity of these skills, for the times we are living in and is a way of creatively cataloguing place-based traditional ecological knowledge.
The first two workshops will explore traditional skills and embodied ways of relating to land and language, alongside mentorship on gathering folklore from a local folklore collector. The final gathering will invite family and community of those participating and, by sharing wild food around the fire, invite collective discussion and celebration of these traditional, relational ways of life.
This process will be documented through bilingual sound and video, aspiring to ignite communities around the country to join us in this practice of ‘Gathering Embers’, before they are extinguished forever.
